Renting a truck is one of the cheapest ways to move, but loading it well is harder than it looks. A badly loaded truck means broken furniture and a scary drive down I-35. Here's how to do it right.

Where to rent a truck in San Marcos

U-Haul car, van and truck rentals are available at our partner Ranch Road Storage in San Marcos. Rent the truck, and our crew will load it for you.

How to load a moving truck

  1. Heaviest items first, against the front wall (the end closest to the cab): appliances, dressers and sofas.

  2. Keep weight balanced side to side so the truck handles safely on the highway.

  3. Load in tiers, floor to ceiling. Heavy boxes on the bottom, light boxes on top.

  4. Use furniture pads and straps. Wrap wood and glass, and strap each section so nothing shifts.

  5. Fill the gaps with cushions, bags of linens or small boxes so loads can't slide.

  6. Last on, first off: your essentials box, tools and cleaning supplies go in last.

When to get help

If you're short on time, moving to a second- or third-floor apartment, or have big pieces like a sectional or a washer and dryer, a labor-only crew is worth it. Our crews bring dollies, furniture pads and straps, wrap your furniture and pack the truck tight so nothing shifts on the road. Pianos, gun safes and very heavy items get a quick consultation first.

We load and unload rental trucks, PODS, U-Boxes and storage units all over San Marcos, 24/7, and can help the same day when a crew is available. See truck loading help or call or text (512) 227-4743 for a free quote.
